A 7m-high chandelier comprising 60 massive poppies has been installed at the centre’s Red Mall as part of a number of events to mark the centenary of World War I.

The chandelier, which will become a permanent fixture in the shopping centre, measures 3.5m in diameter and weighs around 350kg.

Gavin Prior, general manager for intu Metrocentre, comments: “The new chandelier will not only be an amazing attraction for visitors to the Red Mall, but it is also our way of ensuring there is a lasting tribute to everyone who lost their lives in the service of their country.

“We are sure everyone who sees it will stop and think about what it stands for."

The unveiling of the chandelier was one of a number of events that took place between August 2nd and 4th as part of a special tribute to the Armed Forces.

Other activities included an exhibition of WW1 artefacts and a display of more than 1,000 poppies that were handcrafted by schoolchildren from across the region.
