Emily Boonyingtan took the student prize in Sappi’s competition for her Drawing Life initiative

Sappi says the competition ‘relies on the development of partnerships between the designers and non-profit organisations, with a view to making a positive difference to the world we live in through the medium of print’.

“With a combination of financial and material support provided by Sappi, the third element in the partnership, winning ideas are transformed into the meaningful and hard-hitting visual campaigns they have been designed to be,” explains Sappi’s PR and media coordinator, Elsa Mouillé.

Professional UK winner Zoe Watkins saw her PTO (Please Turn Over) campaign support an organisation called CHI (Community Healthcare Innovations), which focuses on the health and well-being of local communities in deprived areas of the UK. Watkins’ campaign used the organisation’s leaf symbol and Sappi materials to create beer mats, playing cards and leaflest to be used as promotional and awareness building media.

The campaign’s main objective is to help diminish the taboo surrounding homelessness, using art therapy as a means to build self-esteem for people who find themselves in this situation

Another UK winner was Emily Boonyingtan, who took the student prize for her Drawing Life initiative, in conjunction with homelessness charity The Big Issue.

“The campaign’s main objective is to help diminish the taboo surrounding homelessness, using art therapy as a means to build self-esteem for people who find themselves in this situation,” says Mouillé.

Boonyingtan’s concept saw the creation of an Art Pack, which includes an invitation to a series of art events, sketchbooks with different types of Sappi print media, an information booklet, and a variety of art materials.
