The technical illustrator and the Mimaki [+vid]
They say small is beautiful and working for yourself is the most rewarding way to earn a living. It’s something Daryl Barrett of Creative Signs in London would agree with.

Neat work: Digi-Foil can create packaging prototypes and graphics quickly and with less waste
The self-employed sign-maker and printer has been running his one-man band operation from modest premises on Charlton Road for more than 20 years with some very big names as clients. Now he’s invested in a new Mimaki UJF-3042HG desktop printer with i-Sub Digital's exclusive Digi-Foil foiling system, after checking out the new kit on the market at Sign and Digital UK 2014.
A one-time technical illustrator Daryl says the new piece of machinery will help him to service customers requiring a variety of small-format signage and graphics, colour-accurate packaging mock-ups, personalisation, security marking and decoration effects – often for presentations to their own clients.
Foiling can be difficult with traditional processes but this system makes it easier to create amazing products such as packaging prototypes and personalisation onto virtually anything”
“I studied technical illustration at college,” says Daryl, “but the production side always interested me. As soon as I left college I began working with some very skilful printers and sign-makers. The litho and screen has dropped down a bit but the signage and display has grown. In terms of signage I’m mostly involved in point of sale and display graphics.”
He says that now he specialises in short-run signage and graphics for large graphic design houses and smaller local clients. Daryl Barrett says he chose the Mimaki UJF-3042HG – a version of the UJF-3042 with a high 150mm max head gap (HG) for thicker substrates – for its small footprint, good build quality, primer and varnish options.
"The size is perfect for what I wanted it for," he says. "Its functions are complementary to what I'm currently doing and offer new options. Foiling can be difficult with traditional processes but this system makes it easier to create amazing products such as packaging prototypes and personalisation onto virtually anything."
