Monty and the Menorca sign-maker
In 1999, Dan Osterbery founded a sign-making firm on the island of Menorca with two colleagues. He had originally gone out to the Spanish Balearic island as a diver and diving instructor and then switched to selling prints of underwater photography.

The Mounter’s Mate, purchased by DCD Productions, is a flatbed applicator designed to be operated by one person
To make the business profitable, he bought a printer and soon found he could also create signage for the local business community, which led to the establishment of DCD Productions.
When his colleagues decided to move back to the UK, he found himself short-handed and settled on buying a Mounter’s Mate Workstation from the Buckinghamshire firm so as to be able to work on his own.
We’ve gone from being able to handle five to 50m rolls”
Osterbery says: “Running a business on a Mediterranean island isn’t all plain sailing though; getting skilled staff can be a challenge, and the location also means equipment has to be robust and support spot on to avoid down time and expensive engineer visits.”
Osterbery sourced the Mounter’s Mate as a flatbed applicator developed for graphic and signage specialists, designed to be operated by one person as his extra pair of hands, calling the machine Monty. Mounter’s Mate’s general manager, Omar Benmez, went to Menorca to carry out the installation.
Osterbery adds: “He came over and installed Monty and showed us how to use it. When he saw how we were using our 15-year old laminator he showed us how to do it properly. We’ve gone from being able to handle five to 50m rolls. Omar is our laminating guru.”
